Homeowner Use and Maintenance Guidelines

An evaporative cooler is an efficient way to cool your home in a dry climate. Cooling occurs as air is pulled across wet pads allowing the system to circulate cool, moist air into your home. Read and follow the manufacturer's directions for use and care. Here's a list of things you can do to keep your evaporative cooler maintained:

1. Take out the protective winter covers from the unit.

2. Take out any insulating material (like a newspaper) inside the unit.

3. Check your cooler pads and install new ones at the beginning of each cooling season. When pads are cleaner, the cooler is safer and more energy-efficient.

4. Keep the unit's water reservoir clean from time to time. If the unit is not used, empty the drip pan because stagnant water could be a breeding ground for bacteria and other microorganisms.

5. Secure the water reservoir from rusting. Repaint it if necessary.

6. Check if the float valve operates correctly.

7. Check the connections and distribution lines for obstructions or leaks about twice a year.

8. Check if the fan belt is broken. Don't forget to inspect the motor and bearings too.

9. Monitor your unit for possible noise issues.

10. Ensure that there are no dry spots on the pads when running the unit.

11. Make sure that the level of coolness is correct.

If you do not have enough time to perform the tests or necessary practices, simply have your unit cleaned and serviced at least once a year. Doing so will spare you from any major problems not only with your cooler but also with your health.
